While the terrain in the area is mostly flat, sand and sandstone surfaces make hiking more difficult than expected. Upper Antelope Canyon is the easier section to navigate, with ground-level entry to the slot canyons.

Upon exiting the canyon, visitors take a minute trek on sandy trails back to the parking area. Lower Antelope Canyon takes more stamina to explore, requiring a longer hike to reach the canyons and several stairways and ladders to get into the dramatic rock formations. Esta vez queríamos conocer Slot Canyon. El recorrido por carretera desde la ciudad de San Diego al Desierto Anza-Borrego son aproximadamente dos horas, dependiendo la ruta que se tome.

Nos decidimos por esta ruta porque según los comentarios de otros viajeros es más panorámica, ya que sube y atraviesa la montaña para después hacer la transición al desierto. Y digo temprano porque para nosotros si lo es, casi nunca estamos todos despiertos a esa hora ; … Después de comprar algunos aperitivos y bebidas para el camino iniciamos nuestro recorrido.

Llegamos primero al Centro de visitantes por algo de información. Las personas que atienden son muy amables y responden a todas tus preguntas con emoción. Nos sorprendió el pequeño museo dentro, muy informativo e interesante. Entramos a una pequeña sala audiovisual donde nos proyectaron una película de aproximadamente 15 minutos.

La película muestra el desierto en sus diferentes estaciones, con su flora y fauna, en particular los borregos cimarrones y el gato montés. Nos dirigimos a realizar una caminata por un sendero, donde la recompensa final es un oasis. Tomamos nuestros sombreros, bebidas y cámaras e iniciamos la caminata.

Se nos hizo raro ya no ver los números que marcaban el camino. Si… ¡Nos perdimos! Decidimos regresar. Cuando llegamos al inicio del sendero donde está la información del mismo, casi nos bañamos con el agua del bebedero. Después de refrescarnos vimos el mapa del sendero… ¡si, lo debimos haber visto con atención al principio!

Después de tener un picnic en una de las mesas junto al estacionamiento, descansar, recobrar energía y ver muchas ardillas y aves, decidimos mejor ir en busca de las esculturas de metal. Adiós oasis, hasta la próxima.

La historia de cómo estas esculturas llegaron acá es interesante. Ricardo Breceda, originario de Durango, México, y sin ser artista, un día realizó una escultura de metal de un dinosaurio para su hija. Por coincidencias de la vida conoce a Dennis Avery, propietario de las tierras en Borrego Springs, él es quien tiene la visión de utilizar su tierra como una gran galería de arte al aire libre y así inician esta colección que hasta ahora suman esculturas esparcidas por todo el desierto.

Sus esculturas son una forma de celebrar la cultura y la historia de la región. Después de visitar algunas de ellas nos vamos a nuestro hotel, a refrescarnos un poco y a disfrutar de la alberca.

Después de cenar y ya de noche, tomamos de nuevo el auto y nos alejamos del pueblito un poco. Nos estacionamos a un lado del camino, y volteamos hacia arriba. A disfrutar del espectáculo nocturno que no se puede ver en la ciudad: Las estrellas. Ya desayunados, nos dirigimos ahora sí, en busca de Slot Canyon.
